Project GOTO

Install Project GOTO on the XTEINK X4 Pro

The current release is v1.0.6 (CrossPoint 1.6.0 + Apps 1.0.6). The X4 Pro installs over USB (direct flashing with esptool), not the microSD updater the original X4 uses. After that first install, later releases arrive over Wi-Fi.

Have the original XTEINK X4 instead? Use the microSD installation guide — the download and steps are different.

Download firmware-x4pro-g.factory.bin

This overwrites the device’s internal firmware and may reset internal flash state.

Saved Wi-Fi credentials, device/app settings, the NVS/configuration store, and OTA metadata / partition state can all be erased or reset. Do not expect internal settings to be preserved. This is separate from your microSD card, whose contents are not erased by flashing internal firmware.

Which file do I download?

Download firmware-x4pro-g.factory.bin, the factory image. It is the normal installation file, and it is flashed at address 0x0.

Want ON POINT, a P2P bus departure board, as well? Use firmware-x4pro-gp.factory.bin (GOTO + ON POINT) from the same release instead, and check it against SHA256SUMS.txt there. Everything below works the same way with that file name.

The release also lists files without .factory, such as firmware-x4pro-g.bin. Those are app images used by the Wi-Fi updater. They are not installation files: never flash them at 0x0.

What you need

  • Your XTEINK X4 Pro, charged.
  • A USB-C cable that carries data (not charge-only).
  • A computer (macOS, Linux, or Windows).
  • esptool, the standard Espressif flashing tool.

Verify the download before flashing (the value must match the SHA-256 above):

shasum -a 256 firmware-x4pro-g.factory.bin

1. Install esptool

With Python 3 installed:

pip install esptool

Then check it runs:

esptool version

2. Connect the X4 Pro and find its port

Plug the X4 Pro into the computer, then find the serial port:

  • macOS: ls /dev/cu.usbmodem* → e.g. /dev/cu.usbmodem101
  • Linux: ls /dev/ttyACM* /dev/ttyUSB* → e.g. /dev/ttyACM0
  • Windows: Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT) → e.g. COM5

3. Flash Project GOTO

Run the command for your platform, in the folder that holds the downloaded file. Point --port at what you found above.

macOS / Linux

esptool --chip esp32s3 --port /dev/cu.usbmodem101 --baud 921600 write_flash 0x0 firmware-x4pro-g.factory.bin

Windows

esptool --chip esp32s3 --port COM5 --baud 921600 write_flash 0x0 firmware-x4pro-g.factory.bin

It takes about 40 seconds. Near the end you should see Hash of data verified. and the device reboots itself into CrossPoint.

4. First boot

The X4 Pro restarts into CrossPoint. Open Apps on the home screen, then GOTO (it reads TOGO in the evening). In Settings, the version reads 1.6.0-A1.0.6-G, or 1.6.0-A1.0.6-GP with ON POINT.

If Wi-Fi is not connected, GOTO opens CrossPoint’s Wi-Fi screen first. It tries your saved network; if that does not connect, choose your network from the list. Press Back to skip it and read the last saved edition.

Controls on the X4 Pro

  • Left key → previous story · Right key → next story (wraps around)
  • Swipe left → next story · swipe right → previous story. This follows Settings → Controls → Touch Reader Controls, the same setting as books: Tap uses the screen’s sides instead, and Off turns touch page turns off.
  • Tap the on-screen FULL STORY bar → show the article QR; tap the screen to go back
  • Back → return to Apps · Home → the CrossPoint home screen

Updating

Later releases install over Wi-Fi: connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings → System → Check for updates. The update keeps the package you installed (GOTO, or GOTO + ON POINT). To switch packages, flash the other factory image over USB as above.

Troubleshooting

  • esptool can’t connect. Hold the left navigation button while you plug in the USB cable (it doubles as the boot-select pin), keep holding for a second, then run the flash command again. Release once it starts writing.
  • Wrong or missing port. Try a different USB-C cable (many are charge-only), a different port, and re-check the port name while the device is plugged in.
  • Permission denied on Linux. Add yourself to the dialout group (sudo usermod -aG dialout $USER), then log out and back in.
  • It flashed but looks frozen. Give the first e-ink refresh a few seconds; if still stuck, re-run the flash command (it is safe to repeat).
